In the early eighties, in answer to a need for archiving and giving a fillip to tribal and folk music and dance, a research and performance group was started and named Janavak, the voice of the people. It runs workshops, bringing together teachers and performers from villages, giving them financial support and offers scholarships to students to study under them. The Performing Group interprets Janavak's repertoire and has performed extensively in over 30 countries and is connected to CIOFF, an international body of folk arts affiliated to UNESCO.
With a repertoire of folk and tribal dances from Assam, Bengal, Kerala, Manipur, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Punjab, Rajasthan, the Lakshadweep Islands and many other parts of India, the Janavak folk dance company thrills you with this exciting and vibrant showcase of dance forms from the rich and diverse cultures of India. With a series of short items, the show takes you on a journey introducing you to many Indian customs, rituals, festivals, celebrations and ways of life.
As an alternative, Janavak also offers a one hour performance, 'Panchmahal ni ramtidu' based on the life, culture and rituals of the Panchmahal Bhils of Gujarat.
