Achalayatan: The Immovable
Jashwant Thaker Memorial Foundation-JTMF presents

Bairagya sadhane mukti, se amar noy.

Asankhyabandhan-majhe,

Mahanandama lavibo muktir swaad.

My freedom lies not in pursuing detachment. Amidst a thousand fetters, shall I savour the taste of freedom in delirious joy.

Rabindranath Tagore's Achalayatan (1912) presents an arena of conflicting faiths between old, rigid, restraining values and rebellious, free spirited, revolutionary ideas. The play is about an institution steeped in ancient traditions that has not seen any change throughout the decades. In essence the play is a strong indictment of our ethico-religious and educational systems drained of all meaning and rendered bloodless, dry and sterile through over-emphasizing rules for rules' sake. Elaborate symbolism coupled with a subtle allegorical structure makes Achalayatan as relevant today, though it was written nearly a century ago.

CHHUTKAN KI MAHABHARAT

This is a phantasmagoric story of Chhutkan, a ten-year-old village boy, whose dreams suddenly start coming true. All hell breaks loose when he dreams that the story of the epic Mahabharat has changed and that the warring Kauravas and Pandavas have buried their differences and become friends even before the war has begun. The Nautanki (folk theatre) actors who are performing the Mahabharat in the village, seem to be under a magical spell, being unable to recite the original lines of the war epic.

Next Chhutkan turns his bully cousin into a donkey in his dreams and a few aggressive villagers into a gaggle of squawking geese. Finally an exorcist is called to “cure” Chhutkan but Chhutkan manages to cure him instead by dreaming that the “real” Pandavas will rescue him. They do. And the real Pandavas declare that the only Mahabharat that will be performed from now on will be “Chhutkan’s Mahabharat”.
