Savitri : Flame of the Future, was premiered at Auroville Ashram, Pondicherry on Friday, February 22, 2008

Many generations of people have been inspired by both the person of Savitri from The Mahabharata and Sri Aurobindo's interpretation of her as the flame of the future in his seminal work.

Mrinalini and Mallika Sarabhai first worked on the piece with world music composer Joel Thome in 1980 and it was presented as a work in progress. Over the years Joel has continued to rework it and present it as a concert piece.

This new interpretation brings together Mallika and Joel and musicians from the two continents - Linda Wetherill who has been working on and playing the piece for ten years, violinist Julie Goodale, electronic expert Mike Kratter and Darpana's own K Jayan, Shaji, Palanivelu, Rajesh and Manikanthan.

Understanding Kuchipudi explores the solo dance tradition of Andhra Pradesh known as Kuchipudi or Bhagvata Mela Natakam devised by Vedantam Lakshminarayana Shastri in the last century. It examines the three sources from which Shastri culled his solo repertoire - the Aaya Sampradaya (temple traditions), the Kaceriatta ('concert' tradition) and the Bhavavatam (Vaishnava narrative tradition). The former two were practiced by the sanivaru or temple dancers of Andhra, while the latter was to be found in the repertoires of both temple dancers and Brahmin male performers in villages such as Kuchipudi.

It also looks at history, technique of nrtta, and includes excerpts from the repertorie. Compositions such as Jatisvaram, Mandodari Sabdam, Ksetraya Padam, Bhamakalapam, Krsna Sabdam and Simhanandini are demonstrated.
